Champagne Wedding on a Soda Budget

And not just any champagne let's make it French...

WOW! I’ll say that again...WOW! Have you seen the price of weddings lately. With the increasing trend for people to ty the knot it seems that good old human nature has kicked in and everyone is trying to cash in.

From reception venues to photographers and cake designers, as soon as you mention the word ‘WEDDING’, it’s almost a trigger for the prices to increase anywhere up to 300% (don’t laugh, this is what one photographers quoted difference was!).

So what do you get when you spend that extra $35,000 to $50,000 on that glamour wedding?

Well let’s see...

1. You get the opportunity to make these wedding service suppliers even richer than they were going to be anyway.

2. You get the chance to put a large hole in yours (or your parents) savings.

3. You get the chance to compromise on the type of honeymoon you can go on.

4. You take away the potential for a lower mortgage than you otherwise would have had (assuming you are one of the those who is lucky enough to have a mortgage at the moment...).

But you do get that grand wedding which is the stuff of fairy tales that you were led to believe should be the way two people get married... right?

WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T HAVE THAT FAIRY TALE WEDDING without spending the big bucks!?!?

....and a new car would be pretty nice to start off your married life with wouldn’t it?

When my beautiful bride to be, Karen, and I decided that we too were going to become part of the married community, we (or rather, she) started off along the path of traditional wedding. When the budget started to hover around the $40,000 mark we both took a step back with our mouths agape and started to rationalise the whole wedding plan thing.

YES! Those individual flower settings were nice and the multiple bouquets looked amazing but why is the florist charging us twice what her sister was charged for the exact same quantity and type of settings that she ordered for a recent birthday bash she put on for their father.

YES! The hired wedding cars complete with chauffeurs were impressive and would give a sense of grandeur to the whole affair but, if we were to hire some self drive vehicles of the same or similar type, it would not only save us a load of hard earned cash but it would also give us the opportunity to thank some of those special people who we couldn’t have in the official wedding party by giving them an important task to do for us.

You know, by the time we sat down and really thought about our wedding and took a completely different perspective on the way we allocated our money, we were able to stun our invited guests with the uniqueness and intimacy of our wedding! And all for less than $7000.

Our budget wedding was budget in name only!
